Introducing Wordwall: An Online Vocabulary tool for EFL/ESL

Wordwall is an online language tool for those who want to specialize in vocabulary instruction. It has a free version along with a paid version. The free version covers most of the templates to create games for students. You can create an account with your e-mail or sign up with a Google account. There are many templates to choose from but I especially liked the "Crossword" template and will show you how to create fun crosswords using Wordwall. I liked the fact that this tool automatically creates crosswords with only the words provided by the instructor.

This is the website for the tool that you can log in or sign up to access to the templates.

When you log in and click on the "Create Activity" button, this is the window where you can choose what kind of activity you can prepare for the students. I chose the "Crossword" option here.

Then the tool asks for us to enter words and clues that will be used in the crossword, you can add up to 28 words for your crossword puzzle.

I created a puzzle named Interesting Animals and used clues to give facts about the animals I used in the puzzle. You can see examples and pictures from my puzzle below.

After the activity is finished, there is a score screen that shows how much time it took for us to finish the puzzle. If the activity is shared individually, then we can look at the leaderboard to see which student finished first.

Lastly, we can assign the activity we have prepared either by sending a link or through Google Classroom.

In conclusion, Wordwall presents itself as a valuable tool for instructors with its fun and useful activity templates that can be used both in the classroom or assigned to students outside the classroom. I would use this tool to create an activity similar to the one I showed above and would project it on the smartboard after the lesson to solidify their recently learned vocabulary with a game.

Thank you for reading :)
