Using a Youtube Video for Listening

Resim
Using a video for a listening activity can be both fun and practical for teachers. The video that I am going to use is  The Internet is Worse Than Ever - Now What?  by Kurzgesagt. I actually used this video for my unofficial teaching activity in my internship school. I used this video because it is about social media, a topic that students would be interested in and is also recent. The illustrations in the video also look very vivid and catches attention. First I asked students about their opinions on social media and if they ever come across different views and debates on social media. All of them said yes and I asked if they had ever been in a social media debate. Some of them said yes and some of them said they just prefer reading those debates because it is fun. Then I started the video and gave them a handout with questions and asked them to answer the questions according to the information provided in the video. I also did stop the video sometimes to ask them questions apart from

I found a scene from ''The Office'' series on YouTube which has the option to show subtitles as well. Using scenes from movies or TV shows like ''The Office'' could be used with older learners like high school students or adults.  1- What is the reaction of the employees when the fire alarm goes off? 2-  Describe Michael Scott's approach to handling the fire drill. How does he take charge of the situation? 3-  Pay attention to the dialogue during the scene. Can you identify any lines or quotes that stand out to you as particularly humorous? 4-   How do the characters discuss and react to the events that transpired? 5-  How does the fire drill impact the relationships between the characters in the office?

Using youtube for EFL listening

I found a TED talk I can assign to my students as homework. The tedtalk is about a 30-day challenge and it is 3 minutes long. We can do this in the classroom too. The comprehension question I have prepared: What is false regarding the audio you have listened to? a) 30 days is just about the right time to add or subtract a habit. b) His self-confidence grew as he did harder 30-day challenges. c) His new novel is amazing. d) Big changes are less likely to stick. Answer: c. Here's the link to the video if you want to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNP03fDSj1U

ChatGPT for ESL/EFL Writing

Resim
ChatGPT  by OpenAI is a language model-based chatbot. It uses generative pre-trained transformer technology which is a part of the large language model (LLM) in machine learning. It means that the artificial intelligence trains itself using language entries provided by developers and users. The version I will be presenting is ChatGPT 3.5. Although ChatGPT can be used for a near-infinite number of reasons, it can also be utilized as a tool in EFL and ESL writing. To use this tool, the user simply needs to provide prompts for the tool. More simply, write on the chatbox about anything. Then, the language model will generate a response to your sentence and the conversation will go on. When it comes to how someone can utilize this tool for a specific purpose as EFL/ESL writing, ChatGPT can be used for a variety of purposes such as providing random prompts, giving feedback, correcting, providing vocabulary, engaging in an academic debate conversation with students, and many other things. Using Instagram as a writing tool!

Resim
Today I am going to talk about using Instagram as a writing tool in English classes. As we all know, Instagram is a Web 2.0 application that allows users to interact with each other based on photos. But I think we can look at Instagram as a writing tool.  Teachers can open a class account, which will be run by them, and ask students to do some writing tasks. For example, I have created a class account on Instagram and shared 3 photos. Teachers can post photos and ask students what they think and feel, and ask them to write a paragraph or key points about it in the comments. Other than that, it can also be used for essay or paragraph planning. On this account, students can give peer feedback to each other by replying to each other's comments. The teacher can also give feedback on this platform too.  One thing that might be bad is that since there is a word limit on comments, students will not be able to write full essays. But, using Instagram as a brainstorming, planning, drafting,

Introducing Lit2Go

Resim
Lit2Go  is an online literacy platform created by Florida Center for Instructional Technology to promote the availability of reading materials in education. Although the tool does not have complex tools such as assignment creation and sharing tools related to the material presented, the good thing about this website is that it includes authentic reading sources and audio  files with for all of the reading materials.  To use the website is extremely simple, there are no log in or sign up processes. One only has to click on the website and look for the suitable reading material from the catalogue. These materials are listed through authors, categories, genres and reading grade. One can access the audio and the text on the website or download them if the instructor wants so. An interesting detail for those who want to use this tool is that the level of the reading material is calculated through an equiation called Flesch-Kinclair grade formula which would present a score roughly equival
